WISTA TURKEY has new Board of Directors

Ordinary Meeting of the General Assembly was organised on 9th December 2016 by means of a broad participation of WISTA Turkey members. During the meeting the new Board of Directors were elected with Ms. Halime Can passing the torch to Ms. Nazlı Selek after 5 years of service as President. The General Assembly also determined a course of action for the coming New Year during the meeting followed by a motivational event.

In order to celebrate the election and conclude the year on a high note both WISTA Turkey members and their guests spent the evening with a stand-up show. The yield provided by the ticket sales were transferred to the WISTA Scholarship Fund.

Annual WISTA Scholarships Distributed

Every year, WISTA Turkey welcomes scholarship applications from female students who are enrolled in maritime related university programmes. The number of applicants are on the rise and WISTA Turkey is delighted to announce that a record number of 83 applications were made for 2016-2017 academic year.

The applications were examined closely by the Board of Directors in an effort to provide financial assistance to the most eligible candidates as a result of which 15 students were selected to receive the annual scholarship. The funds were distributed accordingly on 17 Janurary 2017.

WISTA INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE 2017 ROTTERDAM

Every year an international conference is organized by one of the WISTAs worldwide. After last year’s successful event on board of a cruise vessel, WISTA Conference 2017 will be hosted in Rotterdam between 3-6 October 2017.

The headline of the conference is “Future-Proof Maritime Solutions” with interesting speeches to be delivered about new technologies in the industry, environmental sustainability and port management issues.

As usual, participants will find lots of networking opportunities sprinkled in between like coffee breaks, lunches, receptions and dinners. There will also be a guided harbor tour and a city tour for those interested in sightseeing.

Many members of WISTA Turkey already booked their places and will be participating to the Conference by a large group. Early bird rates are over now as of March 1st, however you can still register until July 1st through the standard rate.

New BIMCO President Elected

Anastasios Papagiannopoulos, CEO of the Greek shipping company Common Progress, has been elected President of BIMCO, the world’s largest international shipping association, with 2,100 members in more than 120 countries.

Papagiannopoulos has set three clear themes for his two-year presidential term. The first is to promote digitization across the industry. BIMCO will be working on a range of projects using convergent technologies to pursue this objective, including applying new advances in software capability to develop a brand new contract editing tool.

WISTA MED 2017 MADRID

Another annual event organized by WISTAs is the WISTA Med Conference, which will be hosted in Madrid, Spain between 1-3 June this year.

The organization will start with a cocktail to give a nice opportunity for its participants’ networking activities and will then be followed by discussions about maritime administration.

On the last day, participants will be treated with a full day visit to Aranjuez, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Those who are only interested in the actual conference can only register to the Friday session to avoid paying extra for the touristic activities.

First Meeting of the Newly Elected Board of Directors

For handing over their respective duties and to discuss operational details both the new and the old Board of Directors gathered on 07 Gebruary 2017. Objectives for 2017 designated during this meeting including a meeting schedule of the new Board of Directors, a new financial programme, scholarships to be distributed and events to be organised.

Amongst the upcoming events is a Networking Cocktail where both members and non-members will come together to promote their business and look to extend their clientele. The date for this Cocktail will be 17th March 2017 while venue arrangements are still in progress. Further information about the event will be announced subsequently.

WISTA TURKEY has decided to support EXPO SHIPPING that will take place in Istanbul between 21st to 24th March 2017 and will attend the SEATRADE SUMMIT that will be performed within this event.

Friendly Dinner with TURMEPA

As another valuable association in shipping, Wista Turkey had the chance to have a friendly dinner with President of TURMEPA, Şadan Kaptanoglu on 06.02.2017 and brainstormed on how to continue cooperation between two associations.
